How to post a carousel on Instagram, step by step

On this pageWhat is an Instagram carousel?

To post a carousel on Instagram, tap Create, tap Post, tap Select multiple, choose up to 20 photos and videos, then edit, order, caption and share them as one post. The eight steps below are Instagram's own, from its help centre, and they're the same on iPhone and Android.

Below: the steps, then the questions that come up once you've made your first one. Last checked 25 October 2026.

  1. Tap Create (the + at the top), or swipe right anywhere in your feed.
  2. Tap Post, then tap Select multiple.
  3. Choose up to 20 photos and videos from your phone. Pick square, portrait or landscape: that one shape is used for every slide. Tap any photo to move it inside the frame, then tap Next.
  4. Add a filter to everything at once, or tap one photo or video to edit it on its own.
  5. Put the slides in order. Tap and hold one, then drag it. To take one out, tap and hold it and drag it to the bin. Tap Next.
  6. Write the caption. Choose Single caption for the whole post, or Multiple captions for one per slide.
  7. Add a location and tag people. One location covers the post; tags go on each photo. Tap Tag People, then swipe to the photo you want.
  8. Tap Share.

Or build it on your computer. In WedSchedulePro's Designer you drag your photos into a carousel and watch it swipe through as it will on Instagram. See how it works →

Can you give each photo its own caption and tags?

Yes, in the app: choose Multiple captions to write one for each slide, and tag people on each photo separately. The location is the exception: Instagram's help centre allows one per post.

Per-photo tags are the useful part for weddings. The florist goes on the bouquet shot, the venue on the wide, and each supplier is tagged on the photo of their own work rather than in one crowded list.
