How to post on Instagram from a computer: the steps, and what the website can't do
To post on Instagram from a computer, go to instagram.com in your browser, click Create on the left, then Post, then Select from Computer. Pick your photo, choose its shape, click Next, add a caption, and click Share.
Those are Instagram's own steps for posting a photo from a computer, and they work the same on a Mac or a PC. Here's the full version, what the website can't do, and the other ways to post when your edited photos live on a laptop and not on your phone. Last checked 25 October 2026.
Or skip the browser. With WedSchedulePro, one click in Lightroom sends your photos to your queue, with no export folder and no phone in the middle. See how it works →
How do you post a photo on Instagram from a computer?
Sign in at instagram.com, click Create on the left, click Post, then Select from Computer, and choose a JPG, PNG or HEIC file (or drag it in). Choose the size, click Next, add filters or adjustments if you want them, click Next again, write your caption and click Share.
The full steps, from Instagram's help centre:
- Click Create on the left.
- Click Post, then Select from Computer, and choose a photo, or drag and drop the file. Instagram accepts JPG, PNG and HEIC/HEIF.
- Select the size of your photo, then click Next in the top right.
- Click Filters or Adjustments to edit it, if you want to.
- Click Next. Now you can write a caption, add a location, click Accessibility to write alt text, or open Advanced Settings to turn off comments.
- Click Share.
Step 3 is where you decide the shape. If you already cropped in Lightroom, pick the shape that matches, so Instagram doesn't crop it again. Our Instagram post size guide has the shapes and pixel sizes.
Can you post a carousel from a computer?
Yes: up to 20 photos and videos in one post. After Select from computer, click the multiple-photos icon, add your photos, drag them into order and click Share.
Instagram's carousel help page has one catch worth knowing before you start: the shape you choose (square, portrait or landscape) applies to every photo in the post. You can drag each photo to adjust how it sits in that frame, but you can't give one photo a different shape. You add one caption and one location for the whole post, and you can tag people on each photo.
Can you post an Instagram Story from a computer?
Not on instagram.com. Instagram's help page for sharing a photo or video to your Story says plainly that the feature "isn't available on computers", only in the phone and iPad apps.
The way round it from a computer is Meta Business Suite. Its desktop Stories page lets you upload up to 10 photos or videos to a Story, crop them, add text and stickers, and share now or schedule it for later.
How do you schedule Instagram posts from a computer?
Use Meta Business Suite on desktop: click Create post, choose your Instagram account, add your photos, and pick a date and time under Scheduling options. It's free, and it handles posts and Stories for Instagram and Facebook.
Meta's guide to creating posts in Business Suite on desktop has two limits to know. It posts up to 10 photos to Instagram, half what instagram.com allows. And you need full control or Content permission for the account. Business Suite also asks for a business portfolio, Meta's container for your Page and Instagram account, before you can use it.
Do you need a different method on a Mac and a PC?
No. instagram.com runs in any browser, and Instagram's help centre gives one set of computer steps for it, not separate Mac and Windows ones.
The difference is the route to your phone. AirDrop only works between Apple devices: Apple's AirDrop guide says both sender and recipient need to be using an iPhone, iPad or Mac. On a PC, getting a photo onto your phone means another route, such as a cloud folder or emailing it to yourself.
| Way to post from a computer | Single photo | Carousel | Story | Schedule ahead | What you need |
|---|---|---|---|---|---|
| instagram.com in a browser | Yes | Up to 20 photos and videos | No | Not in Instagram's web steps | An Instagram login |
| Meta Business Suite (desktop) | Yes | Up to 10 photos | Yes, up to 10 | Yes | A business portfolio, and full control or Content permission |
| AirDrop to your phone, post in the app | Yes | Yes, in the app | Yes, in the app | Not covered here | A Mac and an iPhone or iPad |
| A scheduler, through Meta's publishing API | Yes, JPEG only | Up to 20 | Yes, if the tool supports it | Yes | A professional (Business or Creator) account |

Why do photographers AirDrop photos to their phone instead?
Because the phone app does things the website can't, Stories included, so the habit is to export from Lightroom, AirDrop the photos to the phone and post from there. It works; it's just a lot of steps for every post.
Count them. Export from Lightroom. Turn AirDrop on, with both devices' Wi-Fi and Bluetooth on and within 10 metres of each other, as Apple's guide sets out. Send, accept on the phone (automatic if both are signed in to the same Apple Account), find the photos in your camera roll, open Instagram, pick them again, crop again, write the caption on a phone keyboard, and share. Then do it all again for the next post. Apple itself says AirDrop "is best for sharing a small selection of files". A wedding's worth of posts, a few at a time, is where the routine starts to cost you evenings.
What's the quickest way to post from Lightroom?
Export in the shape you'll post, then post from instagram.com on the same computer. That cuts out the phone, the transfer and the second crop.
Our guide to Lightroom export settings for Instagram covers every setting in the Export dialog, and how to save them as a preset so you set them once. If you post from a computer and also from the phone, save one preset for each.
